Solid-waste management, the collecting, treating, and disposing of solid material that is discarded because it has served its purpose or is no longer useful.
Improper disposal of municipal solid waste can create unsanitary conditions, and these conditions in turn can lead to pollution of the environment and to outbreaks of vector-borne disease—that is, diseases spread by rodents and insects.
The tasks of solid-waste management present complex technical challenges.
They also pose a wide variety of administrative, economic, and social problems that must be managed and solved.

=> Hazardous Waste

In Uttarakhand, growth of population, industrialization and urbanization has resulted in generation of large volumes of solid waste. The total waste generation in the state is continuously increasing with growth in population, urbanization, high per capita income, increase in construction and commercial activities, increase in slaughter houses and shift towards western lifestyles. However, urbanization is the key driving factor amongst all.
